Call for Local Artist!

The La Grande Arts Commission is seeking proposals for a sculpture to be sited outside La Grande’s Cook Memorial Library. The La Grande Arts Commission is excited to be giving a new opportunity to local and regional artists to create an enduring piece that reflects the theme “Honoring the Past; Celebrating the Present; Embracing the Future.” La Grande residents have a passion for their community and pride in their values. Landscape, history, agriculture, and natural lifestyles are important. They are looking for an innovative and creative design that speaks to the cultural identity of La Grande and honors its heritage through a cohesive use of materials and visual language.

The piece is to be installed on a concrete bulkhead outside the 4th Street entrance of the Cook Memorial library. The bulkhead measures 41 inches tall, 17 inches wide, and 36 feet long. The sculpture must be free standing and there is no water access. The area will be well lit at night.

The budget for the artwork will be $50,000 or more, including all costs to cover design, fabrication, shipment, and installation of the artwork. Selected finalists will be compensated up to $750 for time, materials, and travel expenses to develop a design proposal. The La Grande Arts Commission has some seed money, but this project is not funded yet. The intent of this process is to select an artist’s design and budget that can then be used in grant applications and donation requests. There is no guarantee of full funding.

Qualifications materials are due by 5:00pm June 30, 2021. Selected finalists will be notified by August 13, 2021 and have six weeks to create a design proposal that will include design renderings, project budget, a narrative description of the design, and proposed timeline. Our goal is to have the project funded for installation in summer of 2022.
