Depot St. Mural Repair & Revitalization

The alleyway in between Adam’s Avenue and Washington Avenue on the West side of Depot Street is home to an eye-catching landscape mural painted by an Eastern Oregon University Student in the 70’s / 80’s. (We are doing some more homework on this.)

The mural has been a driver of engagement in our downtown since it was painted – just last week many new EOU Students, visitors and families posed in front of its 70’s-esque wonderland of flora. The iconic 14 foot yellow door has probably appeared in 70% of La Grande High School Senior photos; this section of alley, in the heart of La Grande’s downtown cultural center is a testament to the creativity, eccentricity and ‘Wonderland’ type beauty that exists in the Grande Ronde Valley.

Over the weekend of August 21, the mural was vandalized.

HQ, a local venue and media production studio which sits across the alley from the mural, has championed an effort to not only repair the damages but to re-paint the entire wall in the same style as the original. If you are an artist and are willing to donate a block of time to help repaint and revitalize the alley please submit your information to this form:

Additionally, some local individuals, businesses and civic organizations have offered to make donations to help pay for needed supplies. If you are a local business, organization or individual who would like to help, HQ has teamed up with Eastern Oregon Film Festival (a 501c3 non-profit) to collect donations. EOFF utilizes HQ as a venue for its annual film festival and sees the alley as it own step and repeat (red carpet / press wall) photo opportunity for visiting filmmakers and festival attendees. “This is an unfortunate and mindless act of vandalism. Spaces like this, when abused, can create a ripple effect of community harm – from economic and business engagement impacts to the general feeling of safety in our community.” Christopher Jennings, festival director stated. ‘EOFF want to ensure this is not part of our festival goers experience.’

To donate to the supply fund you can follow the link below or send donations to Eastern Oregon Film Festival, 112 Depot Street, La Grande, Oregon 97850.

Public art like this is precious to our community – let’s help make this the best selfie-background in La Grande again.
