This isn’t Justin Montgomery’s first show, however it is his first show here in Eastern Oregon. The La Grande based artist says that he paints with an eye for the potential to exhibit his work, and that he finds it rewarding to share it with others, even if they don’t like it. “I enjoy when my work garners a reaction from people and the only way to have that reaction is to show,” says Montgomery.
Painting hadn’t always been Montgomery’s main medium for art. He started drawing with pencil, pen and ink, and was interested in the digital space. “I’ve done illustration work and comics which I enjoy,” he says. He took to painting after an instructor saw his drawings and challenged him to pick up a brush. He had never painted before that and the instructor quickly evolved into a mentor pushing him to continue working on canvas. The newfound mentor pushed him to work bigger and bolder, which one can see it in his work. “I still draw but I’ve moved away from the digital medium and focus almost entirely on paint,” says Montgomery.
You can see his work hanging on the walls at hq, a creative venue and media studio in downtown La Grande.
